How loud is a radon fan?
Correctly sized and mounted outside the living space, it is close to inaudible indoors. What people notice is a faint rush of moving air near the pipe rather than the motor. Noise complaints almost always trace back to an oversized fan or a mounting decision, not to the technology.
The two sounds, and which one carries
A running system makes two distinct noises. The motor produces a low hum that falls off quickly with distance and through structure. The air moving through the pipe produces a soft rushing sound that travels along the pipe itself, which is why it is often most noticeable in a room the pipe passes through rather than near the fan.
Of the two, airflow is the one homeowners actually report. It is also the one most affected by sizing, because a fan working harder than the system requires moves air faster and turns a quiet rush into something audible.
Where it gets mounted decides most of it
Codes and standards keep the fan outside the conditioned envelope for a safety reason, so that a cracked housing cannot discharge concentrated gas into the house. That constraint happens to help acoustically too, and the remaining choice is between an exterior wall and an attic.
Exterior mounting is generally the quieter outcome indoors, with the trade-off that the fan is now audible outside and its position relative to a patio or a neighbour's window is worth thinking about. Attic mounting hides it entirely from outside but puts a running motor above a ceiling, and if it is fixed rigidly to a joist rather than isolated, the structure transmits the hum into the room below.
What can be fixed after the fact
Most of it. Swapping an oversized fan for one matched to the system is a short service call and usually resolves both the airflow noise and part of the running cost at the same time. Adding flexible couplings at the fan connections stops vibration travelling into the pipe, and isolating an attic mount from the framing addresses structure-borne hum.
Pipe routing is the harder one, because relocating a run through finished space is real work. Worth raising before installation rather than after, which is a good reason to ask where the pipe will go during the site visit rather than on the day.
