Why this region produces more of it than most
Radon is a radioactive gas given off as uranium in the ground breaks down. There is nothing to see, smell, or taste, so a measurement is the only thing that tells you where your own house stands.
Much of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky falls inside an EPA zone associated with elevated indoor readings. Glacial soils and the limestone-shale bedrock beneath them both generate the gas and hand it a route inside, through cracks in the slab, open sump pits, hollow block walls, and the gaps where utilities enter.
Long-term exposure is, according to the EPA, the leading cause of lung cancer among people who never smoked, and 4.0 pCi/L is the reading at which they advise acting.
A system works by reversing the pressure difference that draws soil gas indoors in the first place. A sealed point beneath the floor, a fan that runs continuously, and a discharge above the roofline send the gas outside before it reaches anyone.
