What Short-Term and Long-Term Radon Tests Measure

A short-term device records a snapshot: two to seven days of conditions in one part of the year, under closed-house rules meant to standardise it. A long-term detector integrates continuously for ninety days or longer and reports a single average. They are not competing estimates of the same quantity. One describes a week, the other describes a season or a year.

That distinction matters because indoor levels swing considerably. Heating season readings generally run higher than summer readings in the same house, since the building is closed up and the stack effect pulling on the foundation is at its strongest. A short-term test in February and one in July can both be accurate and disagree.

When a Short-Term Radon Test Makes Sense

Real-estate timelines are the obvious case: an inspection window does not accommodate ninety days, and the entire transaction convention is built around a short professional measurement under documented conditions. It is also the right first step for a house that has never been measured, because it is cheap, quick, and a clearly high result does not need refining before acting on it.

The other legitimate use is verification after a system goes in. There you are testing equipment rather than characterising a building, and a short window is enough to establish whether the fan is doing what it was installed to do.

The case where the answer really matters

The interesting results are the ones that land near the action level. A short-term number just under it and a short-term number just over it are far closer together than they look, because the uncertainty band around a few days of measurement is wide enough to cover both. Making a spending decision on which side of the line a single week fell is making it on the weather.
